UNIVERSAL HISTORY OF EARTHQUAKES
On November 1, 1755, on the of all the saints a great earthquake, following a fire and a tsunami, razed the city of Lisbon. In 1999 hundreds of people were evacuated from the coast of Algarve in anticipation of a possible huge wave. The first event branded the city with a new tradition. The second, however, inspired a collective illusion, a mirage created by the thermal and optical effect known as the Fata Morgana.
To research these events, other topics have arisen: simulation devices and medical equipment for earthquakes, photography techniques of registered and calculated movement, and holographs and mirages. From these topics, the artist is going to develop a series of experiments that will result in unedited works.
The project is financed by Bolsa de Artists of the Botin Foundation (Spain) in partnership with the HANGAR artistic residence (Lisbon) with finances from the Direcção-Geral das Artes– Portugese Government.

LETÍCIA RAMOS (Santo Antônio da Patrulha, Brazil,1976).
She lives and works in São Paulo, Brasil.
Her focus of artistic research is the creation of photography devices for the capture and reconstruction of movement, and her presentation materializes through video, photography, and installation mediums. With a special interest in science fiction, in her series like ERBF, Bitácora and Vostok, she develops complex geographic romances. Chance and experiments with photography and artistic processes are present directions in her work. She has exhibited her work in artistic spaces like Tate Modern, Centro de Arte Pivô, Itaú Cultural, Centro Cultural São Paulo, Parque Lage, Museu Coleção Berardo, instituto Tomie Ohtake and CAPC— Musée d’art contemporain (Bordeaux) and Fundação Iberê Camargo.
She is the winner of important awards, artistic residencies and artistic production grants like the Mark Ferréz Award, for the development of the project “Bitácora” (2011/2012). As a result of this research, she published the book of art “Cuaderno de Bitácora” and participated in The Arctic Circle (2011), a sailboat headed towards the North Pole. Her photographic work produced during the expedition was the winner of the Brasil Fotografia Award for contemporary research (2012). In 2013, she participated in the program “Islan Sesssion” of the 9th Bienal of the Mercosul. In this same year, she developed the project VOSTOK, which consisted of a fictional trip to a prehistoric lake submerged in Antartica.
In 2014, she was considered for the Fotografia do Instituto Moreira Salles grant where she developed the investigation “MICROFILME” and was the winner of the international de fotagrafia Bes Photo prize. She received the Videoarte da Foundation Joaquin Nabuco Prize for the development of the unedited project GRÃO. Recently she received the the Fundación Botin grant for the Arts for her involvement in the project “Historia Universal de los Terremotos” (Universal History of Earthquakes) and is one of the finalists of the 2015 PIPA prize.
