After 4 days in Berlin and walking a 20 kilos suitcase through metro lines, buses, streets, stairs, an empty airport and a ghost plane, I return home, to the one where I live in the last years. Outside there is silence and the sound of sirens shapes the space once inhabited by a city.
This is the place and the time where I exist today and from where I speak.

Being in artistic residency in the midst of a pandemic it’s a creative delirium and a constant attempt to connect with the surrounding reality.
Out there the world revolves. The next great crisis approaches silently and cruelly devastating lives already marked by racial, gender and social inequality.
Everything is connected.

Between texts, books, articles, images, a performance is being materialized.
It’s a poem, an essay. The images emerge on a dark background in contrast to the light that radiates from the Coronas pointed at the Sky, the finger stirs in the colonial wound, the power is questioned and she (I/We) dance(s) frenetically.

Melissa Rodrigues (Praia, Cabo Verde, 1985)

Melissa é performer, arte-educadora e curadora.
Licenciada em Antropologia UNL/FCSH e pós-graduada em Performance pela FBAUP.
Possui formação em Artes Performativas pelo c.e.m. – centro em movimento, Lisboa.
Colabora desde 2008 em projetos de Educação Pela Arte e como arte-educadora no âmbito de serviços educativos, como no Serviço Educativo do Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves (2015 – 2020).
Participa frequentemente em projetos colaborativos e interdisciplinares que relacionam arte, experimentação e ativismo.
Como investigadora nas áreas da Performance e da Cultura Visual tem desenvolvido pesquisa em Imagem e Representação do Corpo Negro em colaboração com artistas visuais, cientistas sociais e performers.
Co-criou com o coletivo Chá das Pretas a performance cabelo e com o artista visual Miguel F a vídeo instalação MEDITERRÂNEO.
Concebeu a conferência-performance De Submisso a Político – O Lugar do Corpo Negro na Cultura Visual e em 2020 no âmbito de uma residência artística realizada no ZK/U Berlin através do programa Magic Carpets Creative Europe Platform concebeu a vídeo-performance CORONAS IN THE SKY, Not a Manifesto! an Essay on Afrofuturism and Liberation.
Em 2020/2021 integrou as equipas curatoriais dos programas Um Elefante no Palácio de Cristal e Anuário 2020 da Galeria Municipal do Porto.
É membra da Associação Cultural Rampa, do InterStruct Collective, do Núcleo Anti-Racista do Porto e da UNA – União Negra das Artes.
