Sobremesa Residencies

Groundtable explores the socio-anthropological dimensions of culinary heritage and migration. Working across spatial, graphic, and participatory formats, the collective creates sensorial encounters that centre food as method and metaphor.

“Our practice investigates the notion of a universal food identity and how culinary knowledge migrates across borders, generations, and contexts. Through process-based, site specific formats, we engage visual-graphic publications and participatory workshops that foreground migration, identity, and social relationships. By exchanging cooking knowledge and stories, we create interactive platforms that accommodate dialogue, cultural reflection, and creative co-authorship. As recent migrants ourselves, we collaborate with local communities to document and co-create cultural and culinary knowledge. We aim to explore culinary traditions, identity, migration, adaptation, and the ways intergenerational flavors act as cultural ambassadors, while offering participants hands-on, multi-sensory engagement with food and storytelling. We document familiar recipes alongside their adapted versions, while providing space for public interaction through collaborative cookbooks.”

This residency is part of Sobremesa: Vagaries of the Palate, a transnational cooperation project on food, migration, belonging. In Lisbon, it is hosted by Hangar in collaboration with Lisbon Art Weekend, a consortium partner connecting the residency to the city’s wider cultural ecosystem and public programmes.
