Deolinda Aguiar
“In a restored building, the traditional façade was preserved as a scenario while a new building, displaced from it, created a narrow gap between the two parts. It cannot be seen from outside. Within this gap, two videos were produced, and a third one was done on the facade of the building. One of the works show fifteen immigrants occupying the space, along with sounds of conversation fragments. In the second video, I measure the height, width, and depth of the place. In the third piece, the facade of the building is filmed. The starting point for the three videos is the golden carving, as a symbol to reflect on the structures of power, immigration and its implications in the contemporary world.”

“My works is revolving heavily around strong affiliation towards understanding the dynamic nature of the spaces which we define as home. I believe a home is not a fixed space and an imperfect space that changes or moves along with time. So, I have created uncompleted house shape drawings with repeat blue lines during the residency program period.”

there was nothing left above but the fear of making mistakes and so they gave in they cringed and stretched back and forth a pendulum like motion a dance of verdict dominated the fall the sound of fluttering wings hitting rapid streams of air hard lines of light phantom madness really thin extended drops of water amplified the sequence and under the influence of hard bright light and with great pressure that comes with loosing ones’ body they felt premonition … wake up … wake up

“At Hangar I had the opportunity to research the rich history of painted ceramic tiles (Azulejos) in Portugal. The square ceramic tiles are used as exterior and interior of buildings, their function spans from temperature control, ornamental art, storytelling murals and local culture symbols. Walking through the historic streets and buildings of Lisbon, I couldn’t help but notice the cubed stones linking all roads and sidewalks of the city, which are another square shape added to the tiled city scape. It made me think of pixels, programing and language, a way of communicating. The work I have started in Lisbon speaks to bringing people together through food and celebratory culture, meals as a way of cultivating relationships, celebrating family and life. Traditionally the Azulejo has ornamental designs or paintings of history and cultural myths. I wanted to bring the aspect of food and celebration culture back to the tile through collage of images.”
