Think Tanger is a cultural platform dedicated to the exploration of urban challenges arising in the city of Tangier. It serves as a platform to concretely address and highlight social and spacial impacts of urban matters, through projects operating at the crossroads of visual arts, design, participatory research and urban practices.
Until end of 2020, Think Tanger will be exploring and developing a critical discourse about informal practices in Tangier and elsewhere, in order to understand the mechanisms of informal urbanism, investigating social and spacial aesthetics produced as result.
In parallel of a regulated urbanism heavily influenced by globalized cities, Tangier seems to offer a different perspective on the way people experience their urban environment. Everyday, we observe many spontaneous interventions in the urban space of Tangier, some of them are ephemeral, others are radical. These actions are completely transforming the urban, social and economical fabric of the city, in a way that is seen as chaotic and defined as “informal urbanism”.
Self-building houses with concret and brick, creating a football playground with sand and plastic bottles or even transforming a sidewalk into a shared garden. These actions are often undertaken without permits, and are initiated individually or collectively by people in need of immediate solutions.
Though, can we consider informality as a way of community resistance ? And how will an informal city look like ?
This year, Think Tanger is looking for artists or collectives whose work is related to social and urban activism, in order to investigate the social and spacial dynamics of informality in Tangier.
