Nikissi

Nikissi takes part in the residency as one half of a creative duo with her sister and co-creator, Lesedi Oluko Moche.

Nikissi is a filmmaker based in Kampala by way of Toronto, Johannesburg and Maputo. Documentary is her primary medium, inspired by her visual arts practice. She uses personal stories to map wider trends and experiences on contemporary Black identities. She began in film through festivals, including Toronto International Film Festival, Encounters Documentary Festival, Images and Maisha Film Festivals. Nikissi rooted her practice in Kampala through her 2-year tenure at 32° East, an organization for the creation and exploration of Ugandan contemporary art. Visual arts continues to inform how she practices film and builds multi-media projects with her partner, and sister, Oluko. Across all media, they are committed to transforming dense research and concepts into easily-digestible explorations of African identities. She have taken part in 2 visual art residencies and is a Sundance recipient for their flagship project, VINTAGE OR VIOLENCE – a podcast, documentary and research project featured in Vogue Business, Dazed and magazines.
