Defne Cemal (b. 1997, İstanbul) is an artist based in İstanbul, Turkey. She received her BFA in Studio Art from New York University in 2019. Her work explores materiality and perception, using painting as a site to examine light, visibility, and meaning within the pictorial plane. She held her first solo exhibition in 2024, Humid Blue, at OG Gallery in İstanbul. Selected group exhibitions include Blind Quest (2024, Ballein, Paris) and Still Together (2023, with Zach Hodges, Sonne und Solche, Düsseldorf). Alongside her practice she has been co-running the İstanbul-based artist-run space Kiralık Depo since 2021.
