Bruno Varela (Mexico City 1971). He is an audiovisual artist who graduated from the Autonomous Metropolitan University UAM X in Social Communication but is self-taught in audiovisuals. Since 1992, he has dedicated himself full-time to the research and production of cinema and video. His process has developed in the geographical and conceptual south of the southern continent, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Yucatan, and Bolivia. His work has been presented in multiple forums, exhibitions, and festivals in Mexico and abroad, such as El Guggenheim NY, the Getty Research Institute L.A, Redcat Center for Contemporary Arts L.A, U.S, The Artists Cinema Frieze Projects/LUX London, England, Cinematheque Ontario, Canada, the Tenth Havana Biennial, Cuba, Reina Sofía Art Center, Madrid, Spain, the Biennial of Moving Image, BIM, Buenos Aires, Argentina, the International Festival of Oberhausen in Germany, Ann Arbor Film Festival, USA, the Laboratorio Arte Alameda, D.F., the Experimental Media Congress in Toronto, Canada, the International Film Festival of Morelia, Mexico, Hotdocs International Documentary Festival, Toronto, Canada, UNAM International Film Festival UNAM, Ficumam in Mexico City, Ann Arbor Film Festival AAFF. Presented at the Audiovisual Cabinet of the Carrillo Gil Art Museum, in the Waiting Room program of the Amparo Museum, Puebla in 2020. Among many other spaces and forums of all sizes and colors.

He has received awards and honorable mentions for his work in various festivals. He received the E-flux award for the first time in 2015 at the International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen, Germany. In 2018, Honorable Mention at FICUNAM8. Best Photography at Vid@rte 99 Mexico City, Best Work at the Soft Geographies Festival, Merida Yucatan 2002, and two honorable mentions at Videofest, Biennial of Experimental Video Mexicali BC 2007 and 2012. Member of the National System of Art Creators in 2019. Received the Media Artist distinction from the Rockefeller Foundation in 2006. His latest film will be premiered at the 2023 edition of the UNAM International Film Festival FICUNAM.
