Ana Bilankov

Ana Bilankov is a visual artist and filmmaker, born in Zagreb and based in Berlin. Her conceptual and contextual practice—working in experimental film, photography, video installation and text—explores themes such as the poetics and politics of dislocation, migration, individual and collective memory, and the construction of identity within states of in-betweenness.

She studied Art History and German Language and Literature at the Universities of Zagreb and Mainz; Art Photography in Wiesbaden and completed the postgraduate program Fine Art in Context at the University of the Arts Berlin (M.A.). Bilankov has received several grants from the Berlin Senate for Culture and has participated in numerous artist residencies across Europe and the USA, including Residency Unlimited and Pioneer Works in New York; Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio; Q21_MuseumsQuartier, Vienna; Watershed Media Center Bristol, UK and Moscow House of Photography.

Her work has been exhibited and screened internationally at venues such as ICA, London; Galleria d’ Arte Moderna, Palermo; Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb; Sinema Transtopia, Berlin; Gallery at New York Media Center and as a projection on the Manhattan Bridge, New York; Institute for Contemporary Art, Zagreb; Photon Gallery, Ljubljana; Kino Arsenal, Berlin; National Museum, Gdańsk; Dazibao – Centre de Photographies Actuelles, Montreal; Collegium Hungaricum, Berlin; Collegio Armeno, Venice; Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka; 1st Moscow Biennale, Museum of Modern Art Moscow.

Her latest short experimental documentary, Chasing the Sun: El Shatt, reconstructs a fragmented memory of a little-known history of migration in the Mediterranean and has been featured at over thirty international film festivals, including the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, BIEFF Bucharest, 25 FPS Zagreb, Kassel Docs, Glasgow Short Film Festival, Achtung Berlin, London Short Film Festival, Beijing Shorts, Olhares do Mediterrâneo Lisbon, Ismailia International Film Festival for Documentary and Shorts (Egypt), Arkipel Jakarta, L’Europe autour de l’Europe Paris, Sole Luna Doc Film Festival Palermo and Istanbul Experimental. It has received several awards.

The residency is funded by Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion.
