Maya Sonderegger is a visual artist based in Zurich, Switzerland. She holds a diploma in Visual Arts with a specialisation in Painting from the Zurich School of Art and Design. Her practice centres on an exploration of the unconscious and the ways in which personal and collective histories shape our sense of identity and belonging.
Raised in the Appenzell region with longstanding family ties to West Africa, she has always moved between different cultural worlds.
Her work spans painting and mixed media techniques. Recent exhibitions include the group show Topographie d’une amitié (Wartsaal Wipkingen, Zurich, 2025), the Artist Postcard Exhibition (Appenzell railway station, 2024), and the group exhibition Girls at Anggrek Agency (Zurich, 2026). In June 2026 she presents a solo exhibition at Artwork, Zurich.
In 2025, she undertook a two-month residency at Prisma in Lisbon, resulting in a body of work exhibited under the title Os nossos corpos também são pátria. This opened a new direction in her practice: exploring how decorative patterns — Portuguese azulejos, West African wax prints, and Eastern Swiss embroidery — carry culture and memory across geographies, and in doing so, form new identities. A question deeply rooted in her own biography.
