Andrea Ferrero (Lima, 1991), is a visual artist whose work revolves around monuments, architecture, iconographies of power and our relationship with them. Her work intends to challenge the way in which ideas of power have been inserted into built space and embedded into collective consciousness, fantasizing with fictional scenarios and creating alternate narratives to official histories. Recently focused on researching food as spectacle, eating rituals as stagings of power and their relation to architecture and ceremonial aesthetics, she seeks to challenge colonial legacies through strategies of humor and fiction, creating edible pieces that focus on the process of eating, metabolizing and excreting.
Andrea holds a BFA in Sculpture from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. She was shortlisted for the Taoyuan International Art Award 2023 in Taiwan, and awarded the Hopper Prize 2021 and the Virginia A. Groot Foundation Award 2019. Andrea participated in the SOMA Academic Program in Mexico City 2019-2021 and has been part of artist residencies at Co.MeRR, Oaxaca; Escuela FLORA at FLORA ars+natura, Bogotá; the “Home not alone” online residency supported by the COINCIDENCIA Pro Helvetia grant; Despina, Rio de Janeiro; MANA Contemporary, New Jersey and Uberbau_House, Sao Paulo. Her solo shows and projects include “Piéces detruites”, a performative action presented at Museo Jumex (Mexico City) in 2022, “El baile del centenario” presented at Matamoros 404 (Oaxaca) in 2022, the digital filter LAND!LAND! created in collaboration with LAAA in 2021 and “Mil Maneras de olvidar” presented at Ginsberg Galeria (Lima) in 2017. Andrea’s work has been shown in spaces such as TMOFA (Taoyuan), PS 122 Gallery (New York City), Museo Jumex (Mexico City), Salón ACME (Mexico City), La Casita (Bogotá), Arsenale (Venice), MANA Contemporary (New Jersey), Largo das Artes (Rio de Janeiro) and ICPNA (Lima). Among her upcoming projects is a 3 month residency at Pivô arte e pesquisa in Sao Paulo, Brasil in 2023.
