Rin Lack is a visual artist and surface designer living in New York, NY. Originally from a small, rural town in Pennsylvania, PA, she grew up surrounded by decorative arts and craft making. Along with country life came quietness and space to build from everyday objects. She received a scholarship to study Visual Art and Photography at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. She then transferred to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2011. During this time, she studied abroad in Amsterdam, ND and realized the invaluable influence that a new environment offers. She then received a full scholarship to study Surface Design and Material Science at Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, graduating in 2018 with a Master of Science. She is the now the senior print and pattern designer for a home decor company in Manhattan, NY.
Rin’s work is an exploration of emotional associations and human experience through the arrangement of abstracted nature. Personifying nature, she gathers shapes from everyday objects and recreates the memory of them in a new narrative. Her work is decorative and tries to not complicate visceral feelings such as joy and loneliness. Sometime escapist, other times jovial or nostalgic, Rin’s paintings describe a moment of emotion through color, gesture, shape, and pattern. She continues to explore materials and objects to paint on, recently learning the art of porcelain painting and ceramic slab painting.
