Tan Shou Chen is a theatremaker from Singapore. His interests lie in the encounters between different cultures across time and space and the traverse between tradition and contemporary. In his residency, Shou Chen is using violence as a thematic fulcrum to develop a performance work. He will investigate the history of violence and the theatricality of violence.
His latest directorial work was a commission by the Singapore International Festival of the Arts 2019 called Orestes by, an original interpretation of George Friederich Handel’s Baroque opera Orestes. Shou Chen made his directorial debut with a commission by Theatreworks (SG), 13.13.13, part of the international company’s 2018 season. He is also a recipient of the Singapore National Arts Council Creation Grant, with which he created and performed an original play called Open Waters, an international collaboration with Thai artist
Jaturachai Srichanwapen. It showed at the Bangkok Theatre Festival 2017 and in Singapore. As a performer, Shou Chen has acted for Singapore’s main theatres and played in key roles in a number of programmes for Mediacorp, Singapore’ premier TV broadcaster.
