This cycle of online conversations aims to present debates on Art / Decolonial Education as a Practice of Freedom – interested in presenting some epistemological concerns about Art / Education based on decolonial thought, proposing education disobedience as an alternative to the decoloniality of this field of study. We aim to reveal that another way of education is possible and urgent.

Talk 1 – May 15th, 2020 – 6 pm – Rui Estrela and Sónia Vaz Borges – From education in the struggle for liberation to the liberation of the current colonial curriculum

Based on the extensive educational work developed by the PAIGC during the liberation struggle in Guinea Bissau between 1963 and 1974, we will focus our conversation on the contributions of this process to think of education as a space for epistemological rupture and revolutionary practice, thinking through themes of militant education, revolution, decolonization, liberation, and education. Exploring these themes we will investigate education within this historical chapter, 47 years after the unilateral declaration of Guinea-Bissau’s independence, asking where does it belong?

Talk 2 – May 20th, 2020 – 6pm – Rui Estrela and Cristina Roldão – Racism and Education – the anti-racist struggle does not quarantine

At a time when it is believed that it is possible to carry out a radical change in the way we educate (within the formal education system, and throughout the non-formal education network), we have started an economic analysis which focuses on the school path for people of African descent. Patterns are identified and structural relations with the socio-economic conditions of schools show that the order made in April 1974 remains unfulfilled. Come to meet the contribution of militant sociologist Cristina Roldão and to seek new ways of thinking education.

Talk 3 – May 25th, 2020 – 6 pm – Rui Estrela and Raquel Lima – Art and life – art as a form of activism in a decolonial education

Education through art from a space of disobedience. How can art change the way of educating? What is the place of the children of the African Diaspora who are part of this territory? What education can we have in times when Global Citizenship is advocated? Can art design a future in order to guide what can be built in the present?

Cristina Roldão (1980 – Tires) is a sociologist, researcher at CIES-IUL and professor at ESE-IPS. She has been drawing a portrait of students of Afro-descendent in the Portuguese educational system, from primary to higher education, but also in other spheres of society. The history of black woman resistence in Portuguese society, institutional racism, “luso-tropical colour blindness”, ethno-racial data collection and affirmative action policies are issues she has been adressing in the public debate.

Raquel Lima (Lisboa, 1983) is a poet, performer, art educator and a PhD Candidate in the program Post-Colonialisms and Global Citizenship of the Centre for Social Studies in the University of Coimbra, with her research focused on orature, slavery and afrodiasporic movements. She co-founded the cultural association Pantalassa (2011) and was the General Coordinator and Artistic Director of PortugalSLAM – International Festival for Poetry and Performance (2012-2017). She has a ten-year journey of oral poetry, a movement that has taken her to over a dozen countries in Europe, South America and Africa. During this period, she presented her work in literature, oral narration, poetry slam, spokenword, performance and music events, namely FLIP – Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty, FLUP Rio – Festival Literário das Periferias, FOLIO – Festival Literário Internacional de Óbidos, Festival Silêncio, Palavras Andarilhas, among others. She published her poetry in several languages and, besides the performances, she have been organizing poetry workshops, highlighting the ‘Workshop Poetry and Gender: for an intersectional poetic writing’, She is now collaborating with the research project Post-Archive: Politics of Memory, Place and Identity, from the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. She published her first book and audiobook of poetry in October 2019, entitled Ingenuidade Inocência Ignorância, by the editors BOCA and Animal Sentimental. She is part of the Anti-Racist Nucleus of Coimbra (NAC).

Sónia Vaz Borges is a militant interdisciplinary historian and long-time social and political organizer. Born and raised in Portugal, she is the daughter of Cape  Verdean immigrants to Portugal during the colonial period. Since a young age, she developed a passion for History and later for throughout her academic life for interdisciplinary history. In this process, she developed also a great curiosity for the silenced histories of people, and peoples actions and roles during historic moments of socio-political change. The liberation struggles and social movements around the world and their internationalism and solidarity, in relation with the fields of education and memories, space and architectures, through the practice of anti-colonial, decolonial and militant research and writing,  are some of the topics that she is particularly interested in studying, teaching and writing about. Her career as an interdisciplinary historian was developed in three international public universities: Lisbon, Berlin and New York.  She has a B.A in Modern and Contemporary History-Politics and International Affairs from ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon, and an M.A in African History from the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Lisbon. In 2016  she received her Ph.D. in Education Sciences- History of Education from the Humboldt University of Berlin. In August 2019, she finished her postdoctoral at the Center for Place, Culture and Politics (CPCP) at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, under the theme Consciousness and Revolution. Between 2007-2011, together with Eduina Vaz, she edited the booklets Cadernos Consciência e Resistência Negra/Notebooks Consciousness and Black Resistance. In 2014 her book Na Pó di Spéra. Percursos nos Bairros da Estrada Militar, Santa Filomena e Encosta Nascente/ In the Dust of Waiting. Paths in the neighborhoods of Estrada Militar, Santa Filomena and Encosta Nascente, was published by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.  Along with filmmaker Filipa César, she co-authored the short film Navigating the Pilot School (2016). Currently, she is a researcher at the Humboldt University Berlin, working on the project “Bildung fur Alle.” Eigen- und Fremdbilder bei der Produktion und Zirkulation eines zentralen Mythos im Transnationalen Raum/ “Education for all” and the internal and external images regarding education in transnational space, focusing on Mozambique and the FRELIMO liberation movement; Nicaragua and the Sandinistas revolution. She is too, on a personal research project focused on The Walking Archives, the liberation struggle, memory, generation and imaginaries.

Rui Estrela is a militant  and community organizer that has been working political thought and practices from a decolonial point of view, using mutual aid and popular education as tools to achieve social transformation. Rui holds a diploma in Political Science and International Relations from the Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies and is studying Social and Solidarity Economics in the ISCTE University Institute of Lisbon.  working solidarity responses in spaces of diminished democracy as forms of combat against the violence of Institutional Racism, based on the experience of the Plataforma Gueto movement.

Arte/Educação Decolonial como Prática de Liberdade

Este ciclo de conversas online pretende apresentar debates sobre arte/educação decolonial como prática de Liberdade – interessa-nos apresentar algumas inquietações epistemológicas acerca da Arte/educação a partir do pensamento decolonial, propondo a desobediência docente como uma alternativa para a decolonialidade desse campo de conhecimentos, revelando que outra educação é possível e Urgente.

Talk 1 – 15 de Maio – 18h – Rui Estrela e Sónia Vaz Borges – Da educação na luta da libertação à libertação dos currículos coloniais atuais.

Pensar a educação como espaço de rutura epistemológica e prática revolucionária. 47 anos passados da declaração unilateral da independência da Guiné-Bissau, da organização das zonas libertadas  e o foco dado ao ensino nas mesmas; que reflexões podemos fazer?  Em que lugar de educação cabe este capítulo histórico?

Talk 2 – 20 de Maio – 18h – Rui Estrela e Cristina Roldão – Racismo e Educação – a luta antirracista não faz quarentena. 

Num momento em que se acredita ser possível levar a cabo uma alteração radical na forma como se educa (dentro do sistema educativo formal, e em toda a rede de educação não-formal), conta-se com uma análise académica iniciada, que foca o percurso escolar dos afrodescendentes. Há padrões identificados, limitações estruturais, relações com um espaço sócio-económico que identifica uma escola que não pode dar como concluída o objetivo assumido em Abril de 1974. Vamos ao encontro do contributo da socióloga-militante Cristina Roldão e procurar chegar a novas formas de pensar a educação.

Talk 3 – 25 de Maio – 18h – Rui Estrela e Raquel Lima – Arte e vida – arte como forma de activismo de uma educação decolonial 

A educação pela arte  a partir de um espaço de desobediência. De que forma pode a arte mudar a forma como se educa?  Qual o lugar dos filhos da diáspora africana que fazem parte deste território? Que educação podemos ter em tempos nos quais se advoga uma Cidadania Global? Pode a arte projetar um futuro de forma a orientar o que pode ser construído no presente?

Cristina Roldão (1980 – Tires). Doutoramento em Sociologia , investigadora CIES-IUL, professora ESE-IPS. Membro das equipas de avaliação externa de políticas públicas como o Programa Escolhas e o projeto Territórios Educativos de Intervenção Prioritária. Defende a recolha de dados com categorias étnico-raciais, a partir dos censos de 2021, de forma a ser possível identificar a população racializada existente no território, e desta forma desenhar políticas democráticas e igualitárias.

Raquel Lima (Lisboa, 1983) é poeta, performer, arte-educadora e doutoranda do Programa Pós-Colonialismos e Cidadania Global do Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra, com a sua investigação centrada em oratura, escravatura e movimentos afrodiaspóricos. Co-fundou a Associação Cultural Pantalassa (2011) e foi coordenadora geral e directora artística do PortugalSLAM – Festival Internacional de Poesia e Performance (2012-2017). Tem um percurso de dez anos de poesia oral, movimento que a levou a mais de uma dezena de países na Europa, América do Sul e África. Durante esse período, apresentou o seu trabalho em eventos de literatura, narração oral, poetry slam, spokenword, performance e música, nomeadamente na FLIP – Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty, FLUP Rio – Festival Literário das Periferias, FOLIO – Festival Literário Internacional de Óbidos, Festival Silêncio, Palavras Andarilhas, entre outros. Publicou os seus poemas em diversas línguas e, além de performances, tem realizado workshops, destacando os de poesia, raça e género: para uma escrita poética interseccional. Actualmente colabora com o projecto de investigação Post-Archive: Politics of Memory, Place and Identity da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. Publicou, em Outubro de 2019, o seu primeiro livro e audiolivro de poemas intitulado Ingenuidade Inocência Ignorância, pelas editoras BOCA e Animal Sentimental. Integra o Núcleo Antirracista de Coimbra (NAC).

Sónia Vaz Borges é historiadora interdisciplinar, militante e organizadora social e política de longa data.
Nascida e criada em Portugal, é filha de imigrantes cabo-verdianos imigrados para Portugal durante o período colonial. Desde tenra idade, ela desenvolveu uma paixão pela História e, posteriormente, ao longo de sua vida acadêmica, pela história interdisciplinar. Nesse processo, ela também desenvolveu uma grande curiosidade pelas histórias silenciadas das pessoas e pelas ações e papéis das pessoas durante momentos históricos de mudança sócio-política. As lutas de libertação e os movimentos sociais ao redor do mundo e seu internacionalismo e solidariedade, em relação aos campos da educação e memórias, espaço e arquiteturas, através da prática de pesquisa e escrita anticolonial, decolonial e militante, são alguns dos tópicos que ela está particularmente interessada em estudar, ensinar e escrever sobre. Sua carreira como historiadora interdisciplinar foi desenvolvida em três universidades públicas internacionais: Lisboa, Berlim e Nova York. É bacharel em História e Política Moderna e Contemporânea e Assuntos Internacionais pelo ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa e possui mestrado em História Africana pela Faculdade de Humanidades da Universidade de Lisboa. Em 2016, ela recebeu seu Ph.D. em Ciências da Educação – História da Educação pela Universidade Humboldt de Berlim. Em agosto de 2019, concluiu seu pós-doutorado no Center for Place, Culture and Politics (CPCP) no Graduate Center of the City University of New York, sob o tema Consciência e Revolução.

Entre 2007-2011, junto com Eduina Vaz, editou os folhetos Cadernos Consciência e Resistência Negra / Notebooks e Consciência e Resistência Negra. Em 2014, seu livro Na Pó di Spéra. Atualmente, ela é pesquisadora da Universidade Humboldt de Berlim, trabalhando no projeto “Bildung fur Alle”. Ela também faz parte de um projeto de pesquisa pessoal focado em The Walking Archives, na luta pela libertação, memória, geração e imaginários.

Rui Estrela, militante da descolonização do pensamento e das práticas políticas, organizador comunitário de espaços de educação popular e de entreajuda para a transformação social. Licenciado em Ciência Política e Relações Internacionais pela ULHT, mestrando no Curso de Economia Social e Solidária (ISCTE) no qual trabalha as práticas solidárias em espaços de democracia diminuída como formas de combate à violência do Racismo Institucional, a partir da experiência do movimento Plataforma Gueto.
