He studied film directing at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisi\u00f3n in Cuba and alongside the realization of his own films and documentaries (including Djitu ten ku ten, 1997) worked as an assistant to Flora Gomes (including P\u00f3 di Sangui, 1995) and to Sana na N\u2019Hada (Xime, 1993). As an architectural model, the two architects arranged the foundations of the circular constructions to coexist,\u00a0<i>mandinga vernacular,\u00a0<\/i>in symbiosis with contemporary construction elements. Cement protects the adobe, the grass roof supports a solar panel, and openings in the walls facing north condition the passage of shade cooled air.<\/p>\n<p>The small filming crew \u2013 made up of Jenny Lou Ziegel,\u00a0<i>(alias, Jenny Dab\u00f3 Conte)<\/i>\u00a0filming, D\u00eddio Pestana\u00a0<i>(alias, D\u00eddio Seidicani)<\/i>\u00a0on sound, and us, Filipa C\u00e9sar\u00a0<i>(alias, Filipa Biai)<\/i>\u00a0and Suleimane Biai, sharing direction and production \u2013 documented each moment of the construction. The circle, drawn on the ground by a giant compass, the cutting of the\u00a0<i>sibi<\/i>\u00a0or mollusc-palm\u00a0<i>(Borassus akeassii )<\/i>\u00a0for the roof beams, the making of the adobe tiles, the last bundle of\u00a0<i>capim<\/i>\u00a0[grass] placed on the roof closed the freshness of dawn within the cottage for all time.<\/p>\n<p>The conditions of producing this film were intertwined with the necessities of constructing the cottage. The camera documented the handling of construction materials in order to produce an image and to record a memory; the community of Birbam used the production of the film as means of building a space with social organization functions. This assembly of space and proposals invites sitting, meeting, listening, conversing, exchanging opinions and deciding on positions and actions to be taken. Uma CABANA reflects upon the return of a traditional social organization, initially eliminated completely by colonialism in what was then Portuguese Guinea, and completely abolished during\u00a0 the revolutionary period of Guinea-Bissau.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, faced with the country\u2019s recurrent political instability, the reactivation of the power of the tribal chieftains in the organization of the communities has become an alternative to the lack or absence of political action by the various Guinea-Bissau governments. Within the cottage we drifted in conversations about architecture, friendship, liberation wars and the drama of present day abusive foreign exploitation of the holy\u00a0<i>po di sangui<\/i>\u00a0wood.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>cancuran<\/em>\u00a0only came close for farewell.<\/p>\n<p>April 2014<\/p>\n<p>Suleimane Biai and Filipa C\u00e9sar<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/1FD09EE6-0EA7-48D8-B066-29C60CE4A2A9#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0Cabana means cottage.
