His interests lie in the encounters between different cultures across time and space and the traverse between tradition and contemporary. In his residency, Shou Chen is using violence as a thematic fulcrum to develop a performance work. He will investigate the history of violence and the theatricality of violence.<\/p>\n<p>His latest directorial work was a commission by the Singapore International Festival of the Arts 2019 called Orestes by, an original interpretation of George Friederich Handel\u2019s Baroque opera Orestes. Shou Chen made his directorial debut with a commission by Theatreworks (SG), 13.13.13, part of the international company\u2019s 2018 season. He is also a recipient of the Singapore National Arts Council Creation Grant, with which he created and performed an original play called Open Waters, an international collaboration with Thai artist<br \/>\nJaturachai Srichanwapen. It showed at the Bangkok Theatre Festival 2017 and in Singapore.
