The Institute is a national leader in translating, communicating, and facilitating research, policy, and strategic engagement to produce change and make a meaningful impact.

The work of the Institute is guided by a focus on “Othering and Belonging.” We seek to deter, prevent and remediate othering, while promoting, expanding and institutionalizing belonging as not only a core value, but as policy, best practice, and an opportunity to envision an inclusive and fair society.

The Othering and Belonging framework has allowed us to better articulate intersections that generate unique positions of marginality, domains in which othering occurs as well as the forces that generate inequality from public finance to immigration and incarceration.

The Haas Institute’s work promotes belonging by designing systems of structural inclusion and identifying fundamental structures, systems, and institutions that inhibit a genuine and inclusive sense of belonging. The Institute’s diverse array of work and inquiry areas are uniquely aligned to create belonging and identify its barriers.

About the Artist in Residence

The Artist in Residence is a new position created to further our work in Othering and Belonging and integrate with the Institute’s focus on arts and culture as a primary way to advance our collective vision of inclusion and belonging. The first Artist in Residence will be selected by a diverse group of public artists, advocates, and partners from the Haas Institute and its network. The work of the selected Artist in Residence should seek to advance and expand our concept of belonging at the nexus of being human and the systems and structures that operationalize structural inclusion.

Belonging is deeply ontological—it speaks to who we are and who we can be. We recognize that stories, symbols, relationships, and rituals are central to a sense of belonging. They also motivate, frame, and ground the systems, political parties, laws, and actions that either advance belonging or enforce othering.

The residency supports artists to create original work. The chosen artist’s project and process will illuminate and advance our understanding of belonging in new and complex ways. In particular, we are interested in works that explore practices of dialogue. The work will be presented at the Institute’s bi-annual Othering & Belonging conference in 2019, but should engage a broader audience through process and/or outcomes.

The Artist in Residence will be awarded with $10,000 in unrestricted funds.

Eligibility requirements:

Artists or artist collectives working independently of a 501c3 nonprofit are eligible.
