The exhibition opens with works on vellum, presented in frames and boxes made from Sapele wood. These works will be evolved further through a live art work titled \u201cThe Navigator\u2019s Manoeuvre\u201d in which Asemota uses the Portuguese explorer and navigator Jo\u00e3o Afonso de Aveiro as an avatar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Riparian Lore\u201d is the seventh site-specific chapter in \u201cEo ipso\u201d the third phase of \u201cThe Ens Project\u201d. Previous chapters in this third phase were realised at Tate Modern London (2012), The British Museum London (2013), Sharjah Biennial, Sharjah (2018), Pitt Rivers Museum Oxford (2022) and Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin (2022).<\/p>\n<p>The Ens Project is Asemota\u2019s long-standing work. Its formative sources are the Edo people of Benin\u2019s tradition of art and ceremony; Victorian Britain\u2019s age of expansion among which brought about the sacking and looting of the ancient Kingdom of Benin; and the essay \u201cThe Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction\u201d by the German theorist Walter Benjamin (1892 \u2013 1940).
