Beyond Entropy was originally developed by Stefano Rabolli Pansera in 2009 as a trans-disciplinary research at the Architectural Association, School of Architecture, in London. Beyond Entropy Ltd is now an independent collaborative practice operating globally in association with public organizations, private institutions and governmental agencies. Beyond Entropy Ltd operates at the threshold between art, architecture and geopolitics while developing a variety of projects: from curatorial activities to art installations, from architectural interventions to master-plans, from public debates to publications. Beyond Entropy Ltd operates as a holding company, owning shares in each affiliated company, which is directed by a local partner. Beyond Entropy Africa, registered in Angola in 2012, is directed by Paula Nascimento while Beyond Entropy Books, registered in Italy, is directed by Tankboys.

Beyond Entropy considers energy beyond the rhetoric of sustainability and questions preconceived notions in order to produce new ideas about the space we inhabit — our homes, cities, and territories. Energy is a conceptual device used to conceive new architectural strategies that reveal space not as a fixed, measurable entity but as a temporal coalescence of continuously unfolding forces. The research is articulated around four concepts: entropy, form, energy, and space. Entropy is the clearest notion of the four: everything seems to pass from order to disorder. Form is the principle that makes reality understandable, and as such, it is a meaning. Energy is the most abstract concept. We don’t really know what it is; it cannot be confused with electricity nor assimilated with force. It remains constant, never increasing or diminishing. Like energy, space is far from being a fixed, quantifiable entity opposed to temporality; it requires a mode of becoming as it is constantly transforming. This is why it is impossible to separate space from its evolution in time.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”CEC” tab_id=”cec”][vc_column_text]

The Centre for Comparative Studies (CEC) was founded in 1998 as a scientific unit of the Faculty of Arts, University of Lisbon.
