Ellen Garvens is a former Professor of Art at the University of Washington. She has received a Fulbright–Hayes Scholarship, National Endowment for the Arts Individual Fellowship Grant, and an Artist Trust /Washington State Fellowship. Her work has been in numerous group and solo exhibitions. Starting with found furniture or discarded materials, Garvens re-uses objects in unlikely ways open to serendipity and humor. She forms temporary arrangements that teeter and disorient, poking at perceptual logic. In this state they hold the potential to escape the mundane and animate a new set of ideas.
At this residency Garvens will respond to the studio environment at Hangar, and the influence of Lisbon. She hopes to seek out new objects and materials either found on the street, at flea markets or other souses to experiment with being open to new ways of working in this unfamiliar environment.
